Sunday, June 25th, 8pm in the Great Room at South Oxford Space (aka A.R.T. New York, 138 S Oxford St, Brooklyn, NY 11217)

“The Harriet Holland Social Club” re-imagines a black debutante ball as an immersive piece of theatre. Guided by an Emcee, we follow six young black women as they navigate “The Black Society Event of the Year” from getting dressed backstage through the crowning of a bright and shiny brand new Miss Star-Burst. This project explores the history and language of “presenting” black female bodies and the interplay of race, class, gender, and economics.

A young black girl runs away in search of her radical brother with the hope to reunite him with their ailing father. Her city is ruled by a vengeful king. Schools are segregated, members of the LGBTQ community are only allowed in shelters underground, women are punished for purchasing birth control and uttering the word ‘abortion’. In a nation where healing seems impossible, a girl sets out to prove the world wrong.
